The Keweenaw Storm 19U Girls Hockey team, from the combined associations of Calumet and Copper Country Junior Hockey won the Northern International Hockey League 19U championship in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan this past weekend.
In the first game, the Storm skated to a 2-2 tie with rival Marquette Advantedge. Scoring for the Storm were Rachel Kinnunen and Megan Yeo. The Storm defeated Escanaba in the second game by a score of 7-2. Scoring for the Storm were Jessica Schlaff, Kim harter, Kenna Farrey (2 goals), Allie Patrick, Erin McKenzie and Mackenzie Hietala.
They faced the Soo, Ontario Wildcats in their third game and skated away with a 2-1 victory with 2 goals by Bailey Raffaelli.
Keweenaw Storm again faced Marquette for the championship where they defeated them 4-0. Scoring for the Storm were Raffaelli, Farrey, Hietala and Chelsea Jacques with Stephanie King earning a shutout.
The Storm will head to Dearborn, MI on March 8-11 to compete for the 19U Girl's Tier II State Championships.
The Keweenaw Storm girls team traveled to Mosinee, WI over the weekend to open their season against Team Wisconsin.
Starting off slow after being on the ice for only a few weeks and not having a full team practice before going into the series, Team Wisconsin outshot the Storm and rolled to a 4-1 victory.
In the second game of the day, the Storm began to look like a team that made it to a National Championship last season. The shots were virtually even, 26-26, but the Storm came out on top defeating Team Wisconsin 3-2 for their first win of the season.
